Mecklenburg County man faces insurance fraud charges

RALEIGH Jun 3, 2026 North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced that Dominick Shevonta Phifer, 34, of 1443 Qual St., Charlotte, has been charged with insurance fraud and attempting to obtain property under false pretense, both felonies. According to a criminal summons, Phifer was in a vehicle accident on Nov. 30, 2025. Phifer obtained an automobile insurance policy from Integon Indemnity Corp. on Feb. 5, 2026, and later falsely told the insurance company that the crash occurred on Feb. 12, 2026, according to the criminal summons. Special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Phifer of attempting to obtain $19,371.77 from the insurance company by making the false claim. Phifer was served a criminal summons on May 26. He is scheduled to appear at Mecklenburg County District Court on June 25. Commissioner Causey encourages North Carolinians to help keep insurance premiums low by reporting suspicious fraud. “Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime,” Commissioner Causey said. “It hits all of us in the pocket through higher premiums.” If you suspect insurance fraud or other white-collar crimes, please report it.
